Catalin Stoean (University of Craiova, Romania)
Is a Full Professor at the University of Craiova, Romania, where he teaches the courses of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision. He had visited several universities via research scholarships, like DAAD at TU Dortmund University and Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Fulbright at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, as well as the University of Malaga via a grant for foreign researchers. His research interests include the evaluation and adaptation of machine and deep learning approaches for various real-world tasks in domains like medicine, chemistry, energy and even cultural heritage.The applications are related to various research projects in which he was involved o are ongoing. He co-autored more than 70 publications in the Web of Science Core Collection.
Ezequiel López Rubio (University of Málaga, Spain)
Holds a degree in Computer Science (1999) and a PhD in Computer Engineering (2002) from the University of Malaga, as well as a degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology (2010), a Master's in Logic, History and Philosophy of Science (2016), and a PhD in Philosophy of Science (2020) from the National University of Distance Education (UNED). He joined the Department of Languages and Computer Science at the University of Malaga as a professor in 2000, where he has been a Full Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence since 2017. He is a member of the Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga (IBIMA) and the research group leader of the Computational Intelligence and Image Analysis (ICAI) group at the University of Malaga (TIC-163). His main research activity is in the field of Artificial Intelligence, focusing on deep artificial neural networks, image processing, and computer vision.
He has established long-term research collaborations with De Montfort University (Leicester, England), the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and the University of Amsterdam. He has participated in 20 regional, national, and international research projects, has 88 international publications in JCR, and has been listed among the top 2% of the most influential researchers in Information and Communication Technologies, according to the Stanford ranking, in 2022 and 2023.
Unai Hernández Jayo (University of Deusto, Spain)
Holds a degree in Telecommunications Engineering and a PhD in Computer Engineering and Telecommunications from the University of Deusto. He is currently a contracted doctor professor at the University of Deusto, where he teaches on the Bilbao campus. His teaching activities focus on industrial degrees, where he teaches subjects such as Electronics, Electrical Engineering, and Power Electronics. He is also the director of the Master's Degree in Automation, Electronics, and Industrial Control, where he teaches Real-time Control of Industrial Devices.
Since 2006, he has been a member of the WebLab-Deusto research group, where his research and publications mainly revolve around the e-Learning area, specifically in the design and development of remote laboratories. He also participates in the training of other teachers for the integration of these laboratories into teaching in STEM areas. In 2015, he co-founded LabsLand, a spin-off company that offers remote experimentation services for educational environments.
He is currently responsible for the technical development team of the European project DSPACE (https://discoveryspace.eu/), which adapts to the learning needs of each student, and where a Conversational Agent supports the student throughout the process.

iMath project representative:

Eligius M.T. Hendrix (University of Málaga, Spain)
Is a European scientist with more than 35 years of experience in teaching mathematical modelling, optimization algorithms and computer science. His research focuses on exploiting the mathematical structure of optimization problems in order to derive novel specific algorithms that can be implemented on modern computer platforms. He published more than 90 journal articles and several books and organized international conferences. He is affiliated with the Universidad de Málaga. Recently, he got involved in the iMath project which investigates how we can use Machine Learning and data science for creating a recommender system in en e-learning environment.

Gonzalo Joya Caparrós (University of Málaga, Spain)
Obtained his degree in Physics from the University of Granada (Spain) and the Ph.D. from the University of Málaga (Spain). He is a Full Professor in the Department of Electronics Technology of the University of Málaga and a researcher in the Telecommunications Research Institute (TELMA) and the Group of Integrated Systems Engineering (ISIS) from University of Málaga. He is Invited Professor at the University of Havana (from 2010) and the University of Holguin (2023). His main current field of interest include the foundations of Artificial Neural Networks and their application to the design of systems for recording and processing of biomedical signals, with special attention to electrooculographic records. He has been the principal investigator in 11 Cooperation and Scientific Research projects (funded by AECID and AACID) and has participated as a researcher in 5 R&D projects with public funding. He is co-chair of the International Work-Conference on Artificial Neural Network (IWANN) from 2009. He has published as a Co-editor 14 books in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) Collection.

Abstract:

We live in a time when Artificial Intelligence (AI) is almost everywhere, and almost everyone talks about it. The media is full of news and opinion articles, often written by people with weight in the field of communication but without technical knowledge in the subject matter. These articles often repeat a narrative of potential dangers, biases, and deficiencies attributed to AI that could equally be attributed to humans. In other words, they seem more characteristic of the "intelligent" aspect than the "artificial" one.
In this debate, we aim to analyze, in a reflective manner based on knowledge and experience, some key aspects of AI, such as its impact on our societal model and current teaching processes, or its way of learning and possible resources to reduce its errors and biases.

“CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF MICRO-CREDENTIALS"

Carlos Delgado Kloos
Received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Technische Universität München and in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. He is Full Professor of Telematics Engineering and Rector’s Delegate for Digital Microcredentials at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where he is also the Director of the GAST research group and Director of the UNESCO Chair on “Scalable Digital Education for All”. He has carried out research stays at several universities such as Harvard, MIT, Munich, and Passau. His main research interests are in Educational Technology. He has been involved in a large number of research projects and has published around 500 articles. He has coordinated several MOOCs with over 600,000 registrations and is presently promoting the adoption of digital micro-credentials in Spain through the project CertiDigital (certidigital.es).
Alexandre Sousa
PhD in Computer Science (Aarhus University 1997), is Pro-Rector for Digital Transformation at University of Maia (UMAIA). Previously to joining UMAIA he was a researcher at INESC Porto (1985-2000), Sextant Avionique (1990), Mentor Informatik (1991). He was technical director and project leader, respectively, of the e-government and digital cities projects Maia Digital (2003-2004) and Porto Digital (2005-2008), including building Porto's optical fiber telecommunications network (2005-2015). He was technical lead of Porto's participation in IoT-01-2016 - Large Scale Pilots, SynchroniCity: Delivering an IoT enabled Digital Single Market for Europe and Beyond (2017); coordinated the Erasmus project TRUE - Transparency of Learning Outcomes through Blockchain Technology (2020-2023); coordinates UMAIA’s participation in the Horizon Europe project Omega-X (2022-2025); Digital Europe project DC4EU (Digital Credentials for Europe, 2023-2025); and JIT4NSTEAM (Impulse Program, 2022-2025) that aims at bringing more students to STEAM areas.
Antonio José Ribeiro Neves
Is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the University of Aveiro with academic activities at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications, and Informatics and with research activities at the Institute of Electronics and Informatics Engineering of Aveiro. He has a Habilitation degree in Informatics (2023) and a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Aveiro (2007). He graduated in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Aveiro (2002). He is the Vice-coordinator of the Lifelong Learning Center and the Educational Contact Point for Education at the University of Aveiro for the ECIU University. He has research and academic activities in informatics, namely in the scientific fields of image processing, computer vision, information and coding, and artificial intelligence. His research applications include intelligent systems, health information systems, mobile and intelligent robotics, and robotics in industry. He is an IEEE Senior Member and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Access journal.
Victoriano Francisco Giralt García
Is Head of Systems Administrative unit at Universidad de Málaga. He has also been Digital Innovation Director, ICT Director, Senior Systems Administrator, Systems Programmer, Programmer and Systems Manager at Universidad de Málaga. Victoriano is a Medical Doctor since 1986. Victoriano has participated in several projects, being one of them the Digital Credentials for Europe DC4EU which aims to apply the European Union’s eIDAS trust framework focusing on the education and social security fields. DC4EU will investigate the issuance of educational credentials and professional qualifications in the education sector and the issuance of the Portable Document A1, and the European Health Insurance Card in the social security sector.

Pedro Fonseca
Got his degree in Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications from the University of Aveiro (1988), a Masters in Electronic Engineering from the University College of North Wales (1990) and a PhD in Computer Science from the Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine and in Electronics from the University of Aveiro (1999). He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics (DETI) of the University of Aveiro and a researcher at the Institute of Telecommunications (IT), where he develops work in the area of Visible Light Positioning. In the last years, he has been responsible for several project based unit courses for Engineering degrees, involving Industry and Academia. His professional path is divided between academia and industry. He started several technological companies; from 2007 to 2010 he was General Manager of Micro I/O, Serviços de Electrónica, Lda. He regularly collaborates with several companies as consultant and scientific advisor. He is co-author of several registered patents. He is a senior member of the IEEE, being currently Vice-Chair of Portugal Section, after having served as Chair of Education Society Portugal Chapter. He is a senior member of the Order of Engineers, where he was Deputy Delegate of the Aveiro District Delegation in the term 2016-2018.
Pedro J. Muñoz-Merino
Is Full Professor at the Department of Telematics Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. In 2003, he received his Telecommunication Engineering degree from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and in 2009 his PhD in Telematics Engineering from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He has been the coordinator of the LALA project, a project funded by the European Commission for the adoption of learning analytics in Latin America. He has also participated in more than 40 research projects at the international and national level, also including several contracts with companies, being the Principal Investigator in several of them related to learning analytics, educational data mining and adaptive systems. He is the co-author of more than 150 scientific publications including more than 50 in journals indexed in the JCR. In addition, he has coordinated the development and deployment of different learning analytics tools. He is also an IEEE Senior Member from 2015. His skills and experience include research and development in learning analytics, educational data mining, evaluation of learning experiences, user studies, gamification or Intelligent Tutoring System.

Abstract:

Micro-credentials are certifications of small pieces of knowledge, competences or aptitudes, on the opposite to certifications of complete degrees. It allows a fined-grained recognition of students skills which is personalized to each one. Students can adapt their learning path selecting the topics to learn for which they get recognition and can discard other topics for which they are not interested in. In electronics, micro-credentials can have an important role in the teaching and learning process.

Micro-credential promotes small courses for traditional topics but also emerging topics that can engage life long learning. In the current context, it is essential to update knowledge and get certificates and recognition about it. Micro-credentials can be taught in a formal manner but also in an informal one.

There are different challenges about micro-credentials such as how to define these small pieces of knowledge, how to make certifications compatible and interoperable, how to evaluate them in a fair manner that is compatible and comparable from different countries and contexts, which institutions can issue these certificates, the security of certificates, possibility of combination of different micro-credentials from different institutions, or the democratization of teaching since access to these courses may not have so high requirements.

“MUJERES EN STEM - VISIBILIZACIÓN, EDUCACIÓN Y PROFESIÓN"

Soledad Díaz Campos
Gerente de la Asociación de Parques Científicos y Tecnológicos de España (APTE). Licenciada en Periodismo por la Universidad de Málaga, EMBA por ESIC Business School y experta en Marketing Digital por ESIC Business School. Trabaja en APTE desde hace 24 años y durante estos años ha desarrollado más de 40 proyectos relacionados con actividades de promoción de la innovación, de apoyo al crecimiento de empresas, de vocaciones STEAM y de transformación digital. Es coautora del paper publicado en la revista Journal of Gender Studies: "Science and Technology as Femenine": raising awareness about and reducing the gender gap in STEM careers. También es autora de un capítulo del libro editado por Palgrave denominado: Science and Technology Parks and Regional Economic Development, an international perspective. Desde 2018 codirige el Programa "Ciencia y Tecnología en Femenino", iniciativa en la que participan una veintena de parques científicos y tecnológicos miembros de APTE y que tiene como objetivo reducir la brecha de género en el ámbito STEAM a través de la sensibilización y promoción de las vocaciones STEAM de alumnos y alumnas de 1º a 3º de la ESO. Desde 2021 es responsable de la secretaría Técnica de la Plataforma Tecnológica Española de Tecnologías Disruptivas (DISRUPTIVE) desde donde desarrolla, entre otras, actividades dirigidas a promover el emprendimiento femenino en el ámbito digital. Desde 2022 dirige el programa APTENISA apoyado por ENISA (Programa de Ideación y Aceleración de Startups) en el que también se promueve el emprendimiento femenino. Es miembro de AMIT - MIT (Asociación de Mujeres Investigadoras y Tecnólogas). Participa en la Red Internacional Women in IASP de la Asociación Internacional de Parques Científicos y Tecnológicos y Áreas de Innovación. Es vicepresidenta de la Comisión de Blockchain de AMETIC.
Aurora Gil de Castro
Es profesora Titular de Universidad del departamento de Ingeniería Electrónica y de Computadores de la Universidad de Córdoba. Es coordinadora del Programa de Doctorado en Computación Avanzada, Energía y Plasmas de la UCO, y miembro del grupo de investigación Instrumentación y Electrónica Industrial (TIC 240). Senior member del IEEE, vocal en la directiva IEEE España y tesorera del IEEE WIE España. Coordinadora del proyecto ‘Diseño de prototipos electrónicos inclusivos para soluciones biomédicas’ financiado por la Universidad de Córdoba e investigadora del proyecto ‘Exploración de la aplicación práctica de la inteligencia artificial generativa en entornos educativos de Internet de las cosas y la industria conectada’ financiado por la UNIR. Ha participado en más de 15 proyectos de investigación y/o contratos con empresas. Actualmente es responsable de un proyecto de investigación financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación. Ha codirigido 4 tesis doctorales y más de 20 trabajos fin de titulación. Es autora de más de 100 contribuciones científicas, de las cuales 32 son publicaciones en revistas indexadas en JCR.
Sonia González Navarro
Es profesora Titular de Universidad en el departamento de Arquitectura de Computadores de la Universidad de Málaga y Doctora en Informática por la misma universidad. Desde 2018 co-organizadora del Campus TECH Chicas, Informática que se celebra en la ETSI Informática, UMA. El objetivo de este Campus es aumentar el número de vocaciones entre las chicas por estudios en Informática. Relacionada con esta actividad, en 2019 presentó la comunicación “Campus Tecnológico para Chicas: lecciones aprendidas” en el Primer Encuentro de la Red Docente GENERUMA, 2019 y organizó la actividad “Campus Tech Chicas UMA: experiencia edición 2019” donde las monitoras de los cuatro campus (ETSI Informática, EI Industriales, ETSI Telecomunicación y Matemáticas) intercambiaron experiencias sobre el trabajo realizado ese año y propusieron acciones de mejora para siguientes ediciones. Asimismo, co-organizó el I Encuentro WSarteco de investigadoras TIC que tuvo lugar durante las Jornadas Sarteco celebradas en septiembre de 2017. En el año 2024 ha sido miembro del comité de programa del 11th ACM Celebration of Women in Computing: womENcourage 2024, donde ha evaluado los posters presentados por jóvenes investigadoras..
Ana Grande Pérez
Es catedrática de Genética de la UMA. Investiga en evolución de virus y terapias antivirales. Ha contribuido a la visibilización de la ciencia y tecnología realizada por mujeres con distintas actividades: como impulsora y coordinadora del proyecto COMO TÚ; con la sección Mujeres STEM@UMA de la revista de la UMA “Encuentros en la Biología”; desde el proyecto Encuentros con la Ciencia dando protagonismo a mujeres científicas, con mentorías y talleres para niñas de altas capacidades; colaborando con Talent Woman como asesora y coordinadora de talleres de Ciencia (2018 y 2019), moderadora de la Mesa Redonda Research (2019) y ponente (2021); con charlas, entrevistas en prensa, radio y televisión. Por el proyecto COMO TÚ obtuvo el I Premio Margarita Salas a la mejor iniciativa del profesorado. Fue galardonada con la Bandera de Andalucía de la Investigación, la Ciencia y la Salud (2021) por visibilizar la gran contribución de la mujer en la ciencia. Recientemente, ha obtenido un Accésit en el II Premio de la UMA a la divulgación científica (2024) por el proyecto COMO TÚ.

Cristina Urdiales García
Es catedrática en el área de Tecnología Electrónica, Ingeniera de Telecomunicación por la Politécnica de Madrid y doctora en Robótica por la Universidad de Málaga y en Inteligencia Artificial por la Politécnica de Cataluña. Más allá de su experiencia en docencia e investigación, ha participado en múltiples iniciativas para la visualización de mujeres en STEM, incluyendo participación continuada en el programa Como Tú, la Cátedra Hedy Lamarr, actividades de la Semana de la Mujer en la Ciencia, charlas en colegios, institutos, ferias de ciencia y parques de la ciencia y también intervenciones puntuales en podcasts, entrevistas y revistas de divulgación. Varias de sus actividades de divulgación están disponibles online, como su charla TedX, intervención en enlighteED, programa ConCiencia de Mujer, etc.

Eva González Parada
Es Ingeniera de Telecomunicación y Doctora por la Universidad de Málaga. En la actualidad desarrolla su labor docente e investigadora como Profesora Titular de Universidad en el Departamento de Tecnología Electrónica. Desde el año 2021 participa en el proyecto COMO TÚ y en la Cátedra Hedy Lamarr. Es miembro del comité local y científico de la XVI edición del TAEE.

Abstract:

Esta mesa redonda busca abordar integralmente el tema de la presencia y participación de las mujeres en STEM, desde la sensibilización en edades tempranas hasta el análisis crítico de las dinámicas profesionales en el ámbito laboral. Por ello, la mesa se organizará sobre tres aspectos fundamentales que tienen como objetivo fortalecer el papel de las mujeres en los campos de la ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas.

Visibilización: En este aspecto se abordarán iniciativas y estrategias que tratan de visibilizar el trabajo y la contribución de las mujeres en STEM y cómo estas acciones pueden impactar en la normalización de la presencia de las mujeres en STEM. Se discutirá cómo la falta de representación y reconocimiento puede desalentar a las mujeres a ingresar y permanecer en estas áreas, así como la necesidad de destacar modelos a seguir femeninos para inspirar a futuras generaciones.

Educación: Bajo este aspecto se analizará el papel crucial de la educación en la promoción de la participación de las mujeres en STEM. Se discutirá sobre los desafíos y barreras que enfrentan las niñas y mujeres en el acceso a la educación STEM, incluyendo el impacto de nuevas herramientas tecnológicas como la inteligencia artificial. Se expondrán experiencias y perspectivas sobre cómo atraer a estudiantes femeninas hacia carreras STEM, así como programas y enfoques educativos que han demostrado ser efectivos para inspirar y retener a jóvenes mujeres en el ámbito científico y tecnológico.

Profesión: En este aspecto se analizará el papel de las mujeres en empresas y centros de investigación STEM, tomando como referencia estudios y datos que examinen las diferencias de género en la investigación y desarrollo. Se expondrán los obstáculos a los que se enfrentan las mujeres en su carrera profesional en STEM. Se reflexionará sobre las diferencias de género, destacando no solo las barreras derivadas del sexismo, sino también explorando las que se derivan de características intrínsecas al género, como por ejemplo periodos de lactancia. La propuesta de soluciones para promover la igualdad, así como programas de mentoría que apoyan el desarrollo profesional de las mujeres en STEM también tendrán cabida.
